Exams

ASBOG examination information:

The March 2024 ASBOG FG and PG exams were conducted on March 12th and 15th.  Results will be mailed to examinees when the Board receives them.

Upcoming Exam Schedule

The FG and PG exams will be offered on October 3 and 4, 2024.  The deadline to apply for the exam with the MSBRPG is September 16, 2024. Download and complete the appropriate form and submit it with your application payment to the Board. Once the Board has approved your request for examination, you will be emailed a link for scheduling a slot at a testing center and paying the examination fees. Please be aware that you cannot take the FG or PG exam without prior authorization of this Board.

FG as an Assessment Exam

(You are currently enrolled in a University and have not completed your degree in geology)

To take the FG exam as a University Assessment Exam you must:

  1. You must be a graduating Senior (i.e. in your final semester) majoring in Geology or one of its subdiscipline (e.g. engineering geology, etc.) from either Mississippi State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, or the University of Mississippi.
  2. You must have a minimum of 30 hours of qualified geological course work or in the process of completing the final courses.  If you have any questions concerning the courses you have taken, please contact the Board.
  3. Complete and submit the Authorization form (labeled "FG Assessment Exam" at the bottom of this page) by September 16, 2024.  Your Department Chair must sign the Proctoring form.  The Department Chair's signature certifies that you meet the above requirements. 
  4. Include with your Authorization form a payment of $25, by money order or cashier's check only, made out to the MSBRPG.
  5. Once this form and payment have been received by the Board and you have been approved to take the exam, you will receive an email link from SMT/Prometric to schedule and pay $275 for your exam ($200 goes to ASBOG and $75 goes to the testing company).  
  6. Once you receive the link we strongly advise you to schedule and pay for your exam slot as soon as possible as the longer you wait the more likely you will have difficulty scheduling your exam at your preferred testing center.

​​Fundamentals of Geology and Practice of Geology Examinations For GIT or RPG

Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam - You may take the FG exam if:

  1. You have graduated from an accredited University with a degree in Geology or related subdiscipline (e.g. engineering geology, etc.) with a minimum of 30 hours of qualified geological course work.  Contact the Board if you have any questions about your course work.
  2. You meet the minimum requirements as set forth by the MSBRPG law and the rules and regulations of this Board.
  3. You MUST have a COMPLETE GIT application on file with the Board.  You will not be allowed to take the exam if your application is incomplete.  All fees will be forfeited if your application is not complete.
  4. If you are taking the FG exam and you have a complete GIT application on file with the Board, your application remains valid and will not require updating unless your GIT application is several  years old.  If you have any questions, please contact the Board.

Practice of Geology (PG) Exam - You may take the PG exam if:

  1. You have graduated with a degree in Geology or related subdiscipline (engineering geology, etc.) with a minimum of 30 hours of qualified geological course work.  Contact the Board if you have any question about your course work.
  2. You have passed the FG exam. 
  3. You have worked for a minimum of 4 years in the field of Geology under the supervision of a licensed geologist. 
  4. You MUST have a COMPLETE RPG application on file with this Board. You will not be allowed to take an exam if the application is incomplete.  All fees will be forfeited if your application is not complete.

To take the FG or PG exam:

  1. You must submit Authorization form (labeled "FG and PG Exam Form" at the bottom of this page).
  2. You must submit your $25 fee along with your Authorization form to the MSBRPG by the September 16, 2024 deadline. Once this form and payment have been received by the Board and you have been approved to take the exam, you will receive an email link from SMT/Prometric to schedule and pay the fee for your exam. ($275 for FG - $325 for PG).
  3. Once you receive the link we strongly advise you to schedule and pay for your exam slot as soon as possible as the longer you wait the more likely you will have difficulty scheduling your exam at your preferred testing center..
